Good morning!
I’m sharing some big personal news today: at the start of the new year, our family is moving overseas! Thank you to Exhale Creativity and Brevity Mag for the writing prompt I needed to share this story.
Why are we moving to Germany?
Because the day I asked the question, the Kansas sky stretched beyond the car window, all the way to the horizon. Because for some reason I cannot explain, I couldn’t stop my mouth from forming the words, “What if we someday moved overseas?” Because he seemed intrigued by the question. Because we made a list of reasons it would never work—and a few ways it could—and drove on with our lives.
Because only three weeks later, a surprise opportunity landed in his inbox which strangely (miraculously?) fit inside all the parameters we had discussed. Because we followed the next crumb, and the one after that. Because our counselor did not tell us it was a crazy idea, like he has dozens of times before. Because while I was walking around the park on a steamy fall morning, my phone rang and he said, “I got the job.” Because I cried behind my sunglasses for another full lap, knowing I was already walking across a threshold.
Because it’s only for three years. Because our kids are old enough and young enough. Because schnitzel. Because castles. Because Oktoberfest. Because after a decade of grounded work, we have a chance to widen our perspective. Because even though I cry when I think of leaving Kansas City and so many dear friends, I remember the sky still stretches across the ocean, meeting a horizon I cannot yet see. Because I know the Midwest will always welcome me back home.
And because there will soon be plane tickets to Frankfurt with our names on them, dated January 2023.
A few notes …
If you are a friend in real life, and I haven’t yet been able to tell you this news personally, I apologize. We have done our best to communicate, but these months have been a whirlwind! I would love to connect soon.
If you’re a current client, you should have already heard from me — but I will be taking a formal pause from coaching and editing starting December 1st, until I get settled on the other side.
As for my writing, nothing is changing except the scenery!
There will be more to say, but for now: thank you for being here— and for coming along on this adventure.
